Metaphysics and Materialism
In the YouTube video “Gregory Ganssle- Metaphysics vs. Materialism?” the claim that
science is not the only means of gaining knowledge is rational and valid. The video argues that
there are many ways of gaining knowledge, including through the scientific method and
metaphysics or the science of philosophy. I agree that there are other methods of acquiring
knowledge, including through experience, intuition, and revelation. Although science effectively
answers the natural and physical world, it requires metaphysics to explain things that science
cannot prove, such as the study of God, consciousness, and the mind. Science involves
formulating assumptions and using scientific methods to develop hypotheses and theories of the
physical world's operations. On the other hand, metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that
provides truth to the nature of reality and questions the methodology and assumptions made by
science to gauge its validity and truth. The two fields, science and metaphysics, work hand in
hand and need each other to help explain and understand the world around us.
Metaphysics complements science since it explores the nature of reality and how
philosophical considerations play a role in science. There is no philosophy-free science since
philosophical considerations, such as the truth about scientific assumptions or methods used to
explain the physical world, are required to advance scientific knowledge. Metaphysics is limited
to things that cannot be proven or disproven, and science needs to make the connection between
reality and things beyond physical comprehension. Therefore, science and metaphysics need
