Jesuit Martyrs in El Salvador
The documentary features the murders of 6 Jesuit priests, the housekeeper, and her
daughter which took place in 1989 in El Salvador. The murders were committed by the US-
backed, trained, and equipped Salvadorian military on the campus of Central American
University (UCA El Salvador). The Jesuit priests were killed since they were vocal in
condemning the government and advocated for the rights of the poor and the need for peace
during the war in El Salvador.
In my opinion, the documentary shows the brutality of the Salvadorian soldiers who were
backed by the US military and how the death of the 8 innocent Jesuits helped unite people and
aided in ending the war in El Salvador. I found the documentary sad and pitiful since the priests
only advocated for the rights of the poor and wanted peace and unity for all El Salvadorians. The
documentary was educational and showed how civil and religious groups can make an important
stand against injustices and war at the cost of their lives.
The Jesuits followed the Liberation theology which was concerned with the needs and
welfare of the marginalized groups in the community and advocated for social, political, and
economic justice for all people. The Jesuits were targeted as part of the group that advocated for
a settlement between the government of El Salvador and the FMLN guerilla group. The Jesuit
priests lost their lives for spreading the liberation theology and advocating for freedom and rights
of marginalized groups which was against the El Salvador authoritarian regime. The traditional
