HYPOTHESIS TESTING TEMPLATE
Research Question 1:
A counselor who works with adults with anxiety disorders wants to know whether there
is a relationship between scores on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS-A) and the
Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). He intends to study this by giving all new clients the two
measures at intake and looking at their scores on the two measures. He will use the
standard alpha value of .05. Based on this scenario, answer the following questions.
1. Does this question represent a correlational or experimental research design? Why?
ANSWER: (4 pts) Since nothing is being manipulated by the counselor in this research
question, and he is only measuring the two existing variable scores (HARS-A & BAI), it
would be considered a correlational research design.
2. The presentation covers two models of reality on which we base our hypotheses: the
alternative model and the null model. Which of these two would state that there is no
relationship between scores on the HARS-A and the BAI?
ANSWER: (4 pts) The null hypothesis model would state that there is no relationship
between scores on the HARS-A and BAI scales.
3. State the alternative hypothesis for this study.
ANSWER: (4 pts) There is a relationship between the HARS-A and BAI scores.
4. State the null hypothesis for this study
ANSWER: (4 pts) There is no relationship between the HARS-A and BAI scores.
