Gynaecology notes | Sexual health and
dysfunction notes
Overview
Sexual dysfunction involves both mind and body.
Affects 20% of women in gynaecology clinics.
Presents overtly (direct request for help) or covertly (e.g.,
pelvic pain, genital dissatisfaction).
Normal Sexual Function
Pioneers: Masters and Johnson (1957–1990s).
Key findings: Female arousal characterized; vaginal (not
cervical) lubrication; women capable of multiple orgasms,
no refractory period (unlike men).
Promoted sex as normal/healthy activity.
Four-stage linear model: Arousal/Excitement → Plateau →
Orgasm → Resolution (better reflects male response).
Basson model: Intimacy-based cyclical; emphasizes
emotional/physical satisfaction,
biological/psychological/sexual stimuli, sexual drive.
