FEDITORIAL
It was with great regret that we heard recently of the death,
eat an early age, of Hans-Georg Schweiger. As a member of the
Hiditorial Advisory Board his input will be greatly missed.
Looking at his long research career in which many facets of
‘tthe Acetabularia were examined, Hans-Georg Schweiger was able
‘to combine various aspects of cell physiology with modem
‘techniques of biochemistry and molecular biology. From this,
for example, he was able to describe a molecular mechanism for
the biological clock and he and his co-workers proved that
translation was centrally involved in the mechanism of the
‘Clock.
Other fields of interest included evolution of chloroplasts,
the regulation of translation in higher eukaryotes and the
nature of messenger RNA in Acetabularia. Hans-Georg Schweiger
will also be remembered for his nuclear microinjection
technique whereby genes could be transferred into nuclei
without vectors. Many of the discoveries emanating from his
laboratory have had profound practical and economic importance
particularly with regard to crop plants.
As a person it is clear that Hans-Georg Schweiger will be
greatly missed, not only for his many talents but also for his
personality. We, too, would like to send our condolences to
his co-workers and family.
