CHARACTERIZATION IN BURNT SHADOW
In burnt shadow Kamila Shamsi has presented the image of women in very
positive clear concise, conclusive, confident and affirmative. At core it
represent the idea that an individual identity is not fixed block but essentially
liquid, seeking its own level, many in this novel which has sweep of century
blend into a new surrounding maintaining their humanity. They are victims of
forces larger than themselves those who emerge are in end. They have survived.
Hiroko Tanaka
Hiroko is the protagonist of this novel. She creats central and vital in diverse
and changing context and plot. It is through her character burnt shadow shows
all its various themes and diversity in plot and context, the title is also literally
related to her as she has three birds shape burn on her back. She left japan her
homeland as she cannot absorb the losses of atomic attack and been called
HIBIKUSHA which means survival. She is represented as school teacher and
lover of language and exceptional character who accepts difference of all kinds
and who is a home with idea of foreigner. She feels at home with people of all
sorts as her name Hiroko Conard Ashraf suggest that she belong to an world
instead to a nation. The conflicting theme of this novel as loss of home, love or
identity crisis, displacement, class snobbery, nation and international conflict
which ruined an individual and society are represent through her character.
Sajjad Ali Ashraf
Sajjad Ali Ashraf is portrayed as a humble young man who has a great love for
his homeland. He dreams of becoming a lawyer and is depicted as a confident
fellow who knows his self-worth and work foe James Burton. He has a strong
imagination and is an open-minded person in terms of Feminism and Patriotism.
He was a good father and a good husband. Yet, he failed to understand his son
and put the burden of his dreams on his son. Later, he realizes his mistake and
tried to rectify what he did to his son but it was too late then. He gives Hiroko
Urdu lessons while she is staying with the Burtons and they fall in love. On
return from Istanbul, they are forced to move to Pakistan instead of returning to
Dehli after Partition. In Pakistan, Sajjad is a manager at a factory. He is shot
and killed while looking for Raza, who goes missing.
Raza Ashraf
Raza is Hiroko and Sajjad's son. He was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan.
