Comprehension is the ability to read,
understand, interpret and analyze a
written passage in order to grasp its
explicit meaning, implied ideas and
overall message.

Organization of
passage
The internal structure of a passage consist of the
following elements
1. Thesis statement.
2.Topic sentence.
3.Supporting details.
4.Transitions.

,Thesis statement
The thesis statement expresses the central idea or
main argument of the entire passage. It guides the
reader about what the passage will discuss.
Placement
It is usually the last sentence of the introduction. It allows you to
introduce the context before the supporting paragraphs.
EXAMPLE
Smoking (Topic)
Smoking is injurious to health. (Opinion)
Smoking is injurious to health because it affects heart, lungs
and even brain. (Thesis)
Regular physical exercise plays a vital role in maintaining both
physical and mental health. (Thesis)
(This sentence states the central idea of the entire passage.)

A topic sentence introduces the main idea of a paragraph.
It provides claim or angle about that subject. If there is
no thesis statement then the topic sentence must be
present. It is usually shorter than the thesis statement.
Placement
Typically appears at the beginning of a paragraph.
EXAMPLE
Cooking at home is better then eating out because it allows for
greater nutritional control.
Cooking at home (Topic)
Better because of nutritional control. (Topic sentence)
One major benefit of regular exercise is its positive effect in
mental well-being. (Topic sentence)
