School Uniforms Stifle Individual Expression in Students

In today’s changing multicultural society, the concept of student individuality and self-

expression is critical to ensure students have the stamina to withstand the technological changes

and way of life. Across the United States, many public schools are moving towards enforcing

mandatory school uniforms to encourage equality, discipline, and safety for students. However,

this policy comes at a great cost, which is stifling students’ individuality and self-expression in a

period where conformity to society's standards and norms is overvalued (Potterton, 2024). The

argument that school uniforms foster discipline and deter bullying in high schools underscores

the purpose of education, which is cultivating self-awareness and nurturing creativity and

individuality in students. Public schools should allow and encourage students to wear any

descent clothing of their choice rather than enforcing mandatory school uniforms since it

promotes students’ individuality, creativity, and self-expression and respects personal freedoms.

Mandatory school uniforms stifle student’s individuality and freedom of expression.

According to Mahlangu (2017), the First Amendment protects students’ right to express

themselves, provided they do not disrupt the school system and environment. Enforcing a dress

code on young students strips them of their individuality early on, which forces them to conform

to traditional society standards and norms, which are fruitless in today’s dynamic and

challenging economy. Adolescents are in a critical developmental stage that involves self-

discovery and identity formation, and clothing plays a huge role in that. Allowing students to

wear their choice of apparel helps boost their self-confidence, express their own identity, and

represent their values, culture, and religion proudly. A study by Potterton (2024) shows that there

is no direct link between wearing school uniforms and improved academic outcomes. On the

other hand, allowing students to choose their clothing leads to higher levels of satisfaction with

their school environment, which contributes to emotional well-being, authenticity, and personal

development.

In addition, mandatory school uniform sends the message that conformity is more

important than creativity. This policy leaves no room for students who are not academically

gifted and who are more talented in fashion and other creative fields. Public schools should be

spaces that promote innovation, critical thinking, and individual perspective, especially in

today’s morally decaying society. According to Mahlangu (2017), creative thinking and

emotional intelligence are essential components of a 21st-century education, and this is only

possible when students are allowed to be free in terms of self-expression instead of being forced

to be like everyone else. Enabling choice in clothing within decent guidelines allows students to

think independently and make daily decisions, which are critical for problem-solving skills

(Potterton, 2024). It also encourages students to explore their tastes and preferences and

decision-making abilities which are valuable skills in the job market today.

The cost of purchasing school uniforms at regular intervals places a huge financial

burden on many families, especially low-income households. Unlike normal clothing, school

clothing is costly, and the frequent wear and tear forces parents to constantly purchase the

clothes, which can be burdening. According to Potterton (2024), families with children in

schools that mandate uniforms spend significantly more per school year compared to families

without such requirements. Also, to facilitate students’ hygiene and laundry schedules, parents

are required to purchase multiple sets of uniforms, leading to a financial burden. There are also
