Journey to Compassion
Since I was a young girl, I was driven by compassion and care for other people. Coming
from a large household of six children and being the oldest daughter, I was nurtured to care for
my younger siblings and help my parents with caregiving duties, including cleaning and cooking.
My mother played a pivotal role in my upbringing and instilled in me the qualities of a good
caregiver, which involved showing compassion, concern, and sympathy for others. I modeled my
behavior after my mother, who was a registered nurse and mainly worked with older adults in a
nursing home who had neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s
disease, and other progressive disorders. My passion for nursing developed from a young age
when I watched my mother be compassionate and caring to people who were in their vulnerable
state and needed care.
Growing up, I had an aunt who was sick a lot and was diagnosed with an autoimmune
disease. Since my mother was busy with work, she encouraged me to take care of my aunt when
I was available by managing her medicine, cooking, and doing her household chores, such as
grocery shopping, since she had muscle pain and could not move around well. The experience I
gained from caring for my aunt helped me realize the sacrifice nursing professionals like my
mother make since it requires compassion and care. My mother always reminded me that being a
nurse involves patience, selflessness, and compassion to care for people during some of their
lives' most vulnerable and scary times. This message has remained with me throughout my life
and has shaped my nursing career, which I am still pursuing.
