Class 11 notes english chapter The Address
This document is based on the short story “The Address” by Marga Minco, which highlights the emotional impact of war and the pain of losing one’s home, belongings, and past. The story is set in post–World War II Holland and revolves around a young girl (the narrator) who returns after the war to find the address where her mother had sent their valuable household items for safekeeping. The woman at that address, Mrs. Dorling, had taken their possessions during the war, but when the narrator visits her, she is treated coldly and unwelcomely. Inside the house, the narrator recognizes her family’s familiar objects — cutlery, tablecloth, crockery, and other belongings — but they now look strange and lifeless in a different setting. These items, once filled with memories, now bring discomfort instead of comfort. She realizes that material objects cannot bring back the warmth of the past, and she decides not to return again.
