Title: Bonding Type by Solubility, Distillation, and Spectroscopy
Purpose: This lab is used to study the Infrared Spectra and physical properties of molecules to
determine what kinds of intra-molecular bonds are present within the molecules and what kinds
of inter-molecular bonds are present between the molecules.
Procedure:
Solubility Evaluation:
Experiment 1:
1. Put a small amount of water in a test tube
2. Add two scoops of Potassium Chloride (solid)
3. Swirl in test tube
Experiment 2:
1. Put a small amount of water in a test tube
2. Add Pentane with a pipette (liquid)
3. Swirl in test tube
Experiment 3:
1. Put a small amount of water in a test tube
2. Add Normal Propyl Chloride with a pipette (liquid)
3. Swirl in test tube
Experiment 4:
1. Put a small amount of water in a test tube
2. Add Ethyl alcohol with a pipette (liquid)
3. Swirl in test tube
Experiment 5:
1. Put a small amount of water in a test tube
2. Add Normal Butyl Alcohol with a pipette (liquid)
3. Swirl in test tube
Experiment 6:
1. Put a small amount of water in a test tube
2. Add Tertiary Butyl Alcohol with a pipette (liquid)
3. Swirl in test tube
