Title: Measuring Kc and Shifting Chemical Equilibria

Purpose: In this lab we will determine the equilibrium constant for Kc. Also, we will study and
do an experiment related to Le Chatelier’s Principle.

Procedure:
Equilibrium Reactions:
1. Obtain a small flask.
2. Put 10ml of propyl alcohol in the flask.
3. Put 10ml of acetic acid in the same flask.
4. Swirl the flask to combine substances.
5. Obtain a beaker.
6. Put 25 ml of water into the beaker.
7. Use a pipet and take 1ml of the mixture from the flask and put it into the beaker.
8. Obtain NaOH
9. Titrate NaOH from a buret into the beaker until the solution turns a permanent pink color.
10. Record the amount of NaOH that was used.
11. Obtain sulfuric acid catalyst.
12. Add sulfuric acid catalyst to the propyl alcohol/acetic acid mix in the small flask.
13. Use a pipet and take 1ml of the solution from the flask and put it into a beaker with 25 ml
of water.
14. Titrate NaOH from a buret into the beaker until the solution turns a permanent pink color.
15. Record the amount of NaOH that was used.
16. Heat the propyl alcohol/acetic acid/sulfuric acid solution for 1 hour with a condenser
placed above it.
17. Titrate NaOH from a buret into the beaker until the solution turns a permanent pink color.
18. Record the amount of NaOH that was used.

Shifting Equilibrium Reactions:
1. Obtain a test tube with Fe+3
2. Obtain a test tube with Thiocyanate (SCN)
3. Mix these test tubes together to form Fe(SCN)-3
4. Dilute the solution in a test tube.
5. Add thiocyanate to the diluted solution using a pipette.
6. Record your results.
7. Obtain a test tube with Cu(H2O) 4+2 (tetra aquo copper (II))
8. Obtain a test tube with Cl- -2
9. Mix the solutions together to form Cu(Cl)4
10. Record the results.
11. Add H2O
