Title: Acid Base Titrations
Purpose: In this lab, titration analyses will take place doing six different acid-base titrations.
Titration is used to determine an unknown concentration of a substance.
Procedure:
Experiment 1: Weak acid, strong base
Standardization titration was performed to determine the molarity of NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide)
by titrating it against a weak acid, Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate. The acid is put in a beaker and
phenolphthalein indicator and water is added. Titration was then started until a faint pink color
change was seen. Titration continued until the solution was a permanent pink color. The color
change for phenolphthalein is pH level 8.0-9.6.
Experiment 2: Strong acid, strong base
Standardization titration was performed by the 0.130 molarity of NaOH from experiment 1
against a strong acid, HCl. The acid is put in a beaker with Bromothymol Blue which is a strong
base indicator, and water. Titration was then started until a permanent color change to yellow
took place. The color change for Bromothymol Blue is pH 6.0-7.6. 21.9 mL of NaOH was
titrated back into the solution to change the color back to blue.
Experiment 3:
Titration of vinegar was performed. Vinegar is a weak acid that contains acetic acid. 3.09 grams
of vinegar is put in a beaker with phenolphthalein indicator. NaOH was titrated into the beaker
until a permanent pink color appeared.
Experiment 4:
Titration of household ammonia was performed. 2.0693 grams of ammonia are placed in a flask
and diluted with water. Methyl orange indicator was added, and the solution immediately turned
yellow. HCl was titrated into the solution and a color change happened back to orange.
Experiment 5:
Titration of antacid tablets. A mortar and pestle were used to crush the yellow tablets. 0.2148
grams of antacids were added to the flask. Next, 25ml of 0.106 M HCl was added to the flask.
The mixture was then boiled so any carbonic acid that was formed is gotten rid of, we only want
HCl left. Bromophenol blue indicator is added. NaOH titration then begins until a color change
of blue occurs.
