Passage: Acts 9:36-43
A. I have read Acts 9:36-43 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB)
and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please
use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com
oYes
oNo
B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities
and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. You may list as many
similarities and differences that you find as long as you meet the minimum amount.
1. Similarity – Both translations note that Peter went upstairs once he arrived in Joppa
at the home.
2. Similarity – Both translations state that Peter had everyone else leave the room once
he began to pray.
3. Difference – The ESV calls Tabitha (Dorcas) a disciple whereas the NLT calls her a
believer.
4. Difference - The ESV says Peter rose and went with them; the NLT only says he
returned with them.
5. Difference - The ESV says that the widows were showing Peter their tunics [a long
garment worn close to the skin under the cloak] that Tabitha had made; The NLT
says they showed him their “cloaks and other clothes” Tabitha had made.
C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying
1. Main characters: (List them)
Tabitha (Dorcas), Peter
2. Plot: (50-100 words)
There was a woman in Joppa, a town nearby where Peter was doing Ministry, that was a follower
of Christ that was a constant “do-gooder”, always helping those that needed it. That woman had
become ill and passed away and people went to get Peter to pray for her. Peter came & was able
to see the impact that this woman had on the people around. So, Peter went and prayed for her.
He told her to rise. And Tabitha (the woman) did! People in the town of Joppa began to get saved
after seeing the work that the Holy Spirit was able to do through Peter.
