Diary of An Aborigine living in 1600
Monday
Today is an important day, my boy is going to be a real man. Today is his 10 th birthday so he can start his
walkabout. It is very hard for me, his father, to let him go for six months but I know that this is very important
for him and our tribe. So me and my wife had to let him go, it was very hard for us. We missed him very much
but I had to think about our future. We only have two children and he is the only boy. I went fishing today to
clear my mind, when our boy went to his walkabout my wife became a little bit depressed so I had to think
about it how I could solve that issue. When I was fishing I caught six large one, so I walked very happy home to
my wife and told her about the number six that is was not a coincidence. My wife were very happy to hear that
and she thinks that God will protect our boy for six months till he is back to us. So I made my wife happy again
and she cooked the fish for me and my daughter and we ate them together and talked about our son that he
will be back soon and be a real man. I thought also about my walkabout when I was little and I knew how hard
it could be and how strong I became when I got back so I know that our son will fight for his life to be stronger
and to come home to us.
Tuesday one mount later
Today is an beautiful day for our daughter, she grew up and became a beautiful girl. But today she will be a
beautiful woman. My wife organized a day with only woman to teach our daughter how to be a good woman.
Today she saw how to cook, how to clean and she heard all the stories of other woman how they became a
woman. For a father it is very hard to see your little girl grow up. because you know she will leave you when
she is older and become a woman. She has to start her own family and have kids also. So I prepare for that day
mentally. But today I am happy that it is not that day that she leaves me but it is only a day for all the
information to be a woman. She came back today and she was very happy about the fact that she would be a
real woman soon. And he told me “father don’t be afraid I will always be your little girl” and that was the
moment when I felt the tears coming down. So I said that I would go outside to find some wood for the fire so
we could sit together and talk about the good days.
Wednesday six months later
Today was a exciting day our son returned home after six month when he left us for his walkabout. We were
very happy to see him again after waiting so long for him with the thoughts of maybe he is not coming back
anymore. My wife was also very happy she cried the whole day and cuddled him the whole day. It was only six
months but we saw a whole different boy than before. So to celebrate this beautiful day the ladies went
cleaning and prepare the food. Me and my son went hunting for meet. And while we were hunting my son told
me all the stories what he had saw and what he did to survive. He told me that he was chased by a tiger while
he was hunting for food, he killed a zebra and then he saw the tiger so he ran away with the zebra but is was to
heavy. He told me that he cut the zebra open and go inside the zebra so he was hidden for the tiger but he
forget that the tiger could also eat the zebra. And while he was inside the tiger took a bite of the zebra and also
a bite of my son his leg. He showed me the marks on his leg and he told it very proud how he had survive that.
Ans so he told me a lot of stories. We found and killed a reindeer. So we took it home to eat and celebrate his
homecoming. When we came home we saw the whole tribe together the all had some painting on their body
and they were dancing, we call that the Corroboree they interact with the Dreamtime through music, costume
and dance. It was very beautiful and our son was so happy to be back again.
