Classic Migraine

May see an aura. Client may feel depressed, restless, or irritable. They may also see spots or
flashes of light, nausea, or experience numbing or tingling on the face or extremities.



Diabetic Retinopathy

Changes that occur in the retina and vasculature of the retina including micro aneurysms,
hemorrhages, macular edema, and retinal exudates. Leading cause of blindness in the United
States.



Craniosynostosis

Early closure of sutures. Elongated head, with early closure of the saggital sutures and
coronal sutures. Head, face, and orbits are altered



Hydrocephalus

Enlargement of the head caused by inadequate drainage of cerebral spinal fluid



Myxedema

Severe form of hypothyroidism causing thickening of facial features.



Cushing's Syndrome

Increased adrenal hormone production causing a rounded moon face, ruddy cheeks,
prominent jowls, and excess facial hair.



Hyperthyroidism

Excessive production of thyroid hormones. Hyperthyroidism results in enlargement of the
gland, exophthalmos (bulging eyes), fine hair, weight loss, and diarrhea. Possible symptoms:
Irritability/nervousness
Muscle weakness or tremors



Graves' Disease

The most common type of hyperthyroidism. No known cause.



Goiter

Enlargement of the thyroid gland. May be caused by lack of iodine in diet. Prevalent in Asian
and African cultures.



Entropion

Inversion of the eyelid and lashes caused by muscle spasm of the eyelid. Friction from lashes
can cause corneal irritation



Ectropion

Eversion of the lower eyelid caused by muscle weakness.



Acromegaly

Enlargement of the bones, facial features, hands, and feet due to increased growth hormones.



Torticollis

Aka (wry neck), is a spasm of the muscles supplied by the spinal accessory nerve, causing
lateral flexion contracture of the cervical spine musculature.



Disorder characterized by epicanthal folds, narrow palpebral fissures, a deformed upper lip
below the septum of the nose, and some degree of mental retardation.



Tension headache

Aka muscle contraction headache, due to sustained contraction of the muscles in the head,
neck, or upper back. Associated with stress, overwork, position, dental problems,
premenstrual syndrome, sinus inflammation, and other health problems



Down Syndrome

Chromosomal defect causing varying degrees of mental retardation and characteristic facial
features such as slanted eyes, a flat nasal bridge, a flat nose, and protruding tongue, and a
short, broad neck.



Parkinson's Disease

"Flat effect". A mask-like expression due to a result of a decrease in dopamine



Bell's Palsy

Temporary disorder affecting cranial nerve VII (facial) and producing a unilateral facial
paralysis.



Cluster Headache

Numerous episodes occur over a period of days or even months and then are followed by a
period of remission during which no headaches occur. Onset is sudden and may be associated
with alcohol consumption, stress, or emotional distress.



Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

An autoimmune disease that results in primary hypothyroidism. Occurs most frequently in
females and tends to be familial.
