24-hour urine specimen - ANS a urine specimen consisting of all urine voided in a 24-hour
period
Abdominal thrusts - ANS Quick inward and upward pulls into the diaphragm to force an
obstruction out of the airway
abduction - ANS Movement away from the midline of the body
Abrasion - ANS an injury that rubs off the surface of the skin
Abuse - ANS Purposely causing physical, mental, or emotional pain or injury to someone.
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) - ANS A disease caused by the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which attacks the immune system destroying the body's ability to
fight infections.
Active assisted range of motion (AAROM) exercises - ANS range of motion exercises
performed by a person with some assistance and support
Active neglect - ANS purposely harming a person by failing to provide needed care

person by himself.
Active TB - ANS Type of tuberculosis in which the person shows symptoms of the disease and

Activities of Daily living (ADLs) - ANS personal daily care tasks including, bathing, dressing,
caring for teeth and hair, toileting, eating and drinking, walking , and transferring.
Acute Care - ANS Care given in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers for people who
have an immediate illness.
Adaptive devices - ANS special equipment that helps a person who is ill or disabled to
perform ADLs; also called assistive devices.
Additive - ANS A substance added to another substance, changing its effect.
Adduction - ANS Movement toward the midline of the body.
Adult Daycare - ANS Care given at a facility during daytime working hours for people who
need some help but are not seriously ill or disabled.
Advance directives - ANS legal documents that allow people to choose what medical care
they wish to have if they are unable to make those decisions themselves
Affected side - ANS a weakened side from a stroke or injury; also called the "weaker" or
"involved" side.
Ageism - ANS prejudice toward, stereotyping of, and/or discrimination against older persons
or the elderly
