Counselling
Therapeutic relationship
★ Essential for effective counselling, requiring warmth, trust, and a good rapport
between client and therapist.
★ The client needs to feel comfortable and confident to openly discuss issues,
including difficult emotions.
Emotional Support
★ The counsellor encourages the client to explore and express emotions, providing
emotional support.
★ Listening is critical to help the client feel understood and validated.
Relapse Prevention
★ Gives client space to discuss previous relapses and warning signs
★ Together the client and therapist will work together to create a recovery plan
Evaluating COUNSELLING
Practical uses (strength)
★ Flexible – can be adapted for different clients and needs
★ Can be combined with other treatments (e.g., CBT, nicotine substitutes)
★ Can be delivered to individuals, groups, or families
★ Warm, open, client-centred relationship increases engagement and adherence
Lack of effectiveness (weakness)
★ Limited evidence for effectiveness
★ Core benefit (non-judgemental relationship) is hard to measure scientifically
★ No strong evidence that counselling is better than other interventions for
addiction
