“Civilization is not something absolute, but… relative, …. Our ideas and conceptions are
true only so far as our civilization.
Discuss the statement above. Do you agree? Illustrate your view with appropriate
examples.
 Civilisation is a society where there are many social categories, whereby, imposed by
many cultures and many systems of communication.
 Cultural Relativism is the understanding of a person’s belief, values and culture that
should be understood based on that person’s own culture. In other words, cultural
relativism suggests that to respect and value another person’s culture.
 Civilisation is very different from one people’s point of view rather than another as in many
society there are many different cultures.
For example:
 In France, people there while eating food at the restaurant they tend the habit of drinking
wine there as it is seen as a normal thing in France. But in Mauritius, people while eating
food they drink cold drinks or juice with it. As there is a different view between the two
civilisations.
 In Muslim community, its civilisation is said to be a religious one as in Islam it is believed that
girls should cover their faces so that a stranger could not see them when they are going
anywhere and don’t have any freedom. In these countries girls are considered holy. But in
Hindu community it is very different compare to Muslim community as girls have the
freedom to move anywhere in the society as it is believed that in Hindu community girls are
cannot do anything wrong. As what they say they are always right until you find an evidence
against it.
 In the USA, people there have the habit of till late night party after work as they believed
that party is their only source for relaxation and also to make new friends. They believed
that party is a part of their daily activities. But in Australia, people there goes to party but
they do it very rarely as they have responsibilities to look after such as to spend some times
with family after some longer hours of work or to complete after households works.
 Globalisation has also brought the civilisation together as one part based on specialisation.
Trade has contributed a lot to civilisation as they know many methods of trade between
society as well as culture.
For example:
 Countries such as France, Greece and many more has become one part known as European
Union they specialised among them and learn new methods for trading. While trading, many
tourists among these countries can visit the others and they learn new culture and also
promote their culture to others. They bring a source of communication to the society.
 Many civilisations have the habit of getting faster to their destinations before the time
For example:
 In Mauritius people have the habit of moving faster the office before start time. But in
Singapore, it is very different as here people are not always in a haste as they know how to
organise their works before leaving for office and they are always at time.
