fulfil orders.
To fulfil customer orders efficiently across its different store formats and countries, Pick
n Pay relies on several core logistics activities that work together to ensure products are
available, affordable, and delivered on time.
Order processing Order processing is the starting point of logistics activities. At Pick n
Pay, this involves capturing customer demand through point-of-sale systems in stores
and online platforms. Once an order is recorded, information is shared with distribution
centres to trigger picking, packing, and replenishment. Accurate order processing
reduces errors such as incorrect deliveries or stock-outs, which is critical in a high-
volume grocery environment (Bowersox, Closs and Cooper, 2019).
Inventory management Inventory management ensures that the right products are
available in the right quantities. Pick n Pay manages a wide range of fast-moving
consumer goods, fresh produce, clothing, and general merchandise. Effective inventory
control helps reduce holding costs while ensuring shelves remain stocked. For example,
demand forecasting tools can be used to predict seasonal spikes such as festive
periods, allowing the company to stock appropriately without excessive waste,
especially for perishable goods (Jacobs, Chase and Lummus, 2020).
Warehousing and distribution Warehousing plays a central role in Pick n Pay’s
logistics network. Distribution centres are used to store goods temporarily before they
are dispatched to stores or customers. These facilities support activities such as sorting,
picking, packaging, and cross-docking. For example, fresh produce may move quickly
through the warehouse to maintain quality, while slower-moving items are stored for
longer periods. Efficient warehousing improves order fulfilment speed and reduces
