- can also have a unicompartmental procedure where they only replace one condyle
Which condyle is more likely to be replaced over the other with a unicompartmental
procedure? - answerthe medial one
Why do they not touch the fibula during the procedure? - answerbecause it isn't a
weight bearing structure
What are the goals of pre surgical PT for a TKA? - answer- strengthening
- flexibility
What muscles should be targeted? - answer- glutes
- quads
- hamstrings
- gastroc complex
Why is strengthening completed pre operatively? - answereasier to complete this
strengthening when they're feeling okay-ish before the procedure
Why is flexibility important to increase before a TKA? - answerdynamic stretching
program:
- if you can only flex your knee to 90 degrees the quads are going to get short
- don't want this to be the limiting factor of full knee ROM after surgery
What are CPM's? - answercontinuous passive motion
What does the CPG have to say about CPM's? - answer- PT's should NOT use CPM's
for patient's who have undergone primary, uncomplicated TKA
- a lot of studies say that they're not great and they are costly
What does the CPG have to say in regards to the use of cryotherapy for someone post
op TKA? - answer- will be good to use in the beginning for pain and edema
management
- not going to be good to use long term because of its affects on blood flow and tissue
extensibility
- want them to rely less on it over time but up to clinician's judgement when to stop
using it completely
