1.1 Characteristics of the perspective of a competent human being as
presented in the excerpt
A competent human being is viewed as an active agent in their own development rather
than a passive recipient of circumstances. This perspective assumes that individuals
are capable of learning, adapting, and directing their behaviour in meaningful ways.
Firstly, a competent human being demonstrates self awareness. This means the
individual understands their own strengths, limitations, values, and motives. For
example, a student who recognises that they struggle with time management but
perform well under structured planning shows awareness that supports competence.
Self awareness allows individuals to make realistic choices about their careers and
personal development.
Secondly, this perspective emphasises self regulation. A competent person can
manage their thoughts, emotions, and actions in pursuit of goals. For instance, an
employee who experiences stress but uses coping strategies such as prioritising tasks
and seeking support demonstrates self regulation. This reflects the ability to remain
functional despite pressure.
Thirdly, goal directed behaviour is central. Competent individuals set goals, plan
actions, and evaluate outcomes. An example would be a graduate who identifies a
desired career path, enrols in further training, and monitors their progress toward
employability. This shows intentional behaviour rather than randomness.
Another important characteristic is adaptability. The competent human being is able to
adjust to changing environments and demands. In a career context, this could involve
learning new skills when technology changes or shifting career paths when
opportunities evolve. Adaptability supports long term functioning in uncertain
environments.
