Qualitative Methods
methods that attempt to collect information about the social
world that cannot be readily converted to numeric form
quantitative methods
methods that seek to obtain information about the social world
that is already in or can be converted to numeric form
non-experimental research
researchers do not intervene by controlling the IV
(Observational)
Non-experimental research- Advantages
- Very practical
- Efficient was to collect large amounts of data
When to use non-experimental research
-research question or hypothesis can be about a single variable
rather than a statistical relationship between two variables
-causal relationship
quasi-experimental design
An experiment that does not require random assignment to
conditions.
Quasi-experimental advantages
, - Practical
- More acceptable to participants
- Can use when unethical to randomize participants
Quasi-experimental disadvantages
Less able to make 'CAUSE AND EFFECT' statements than with
experimental designs
Experimental research
Randomizing people to different groups and measure outcomes.
Intervention, control and experimental group
Experimental Advantages
Testing cause and effect relationships.
Experimental research disadvantages
- Control vs practical significance
- Generalizability
- Need to randomize participants.
Correlational
an association between two variables that is a tendency for
variation in one variable to be related to variation of another
Descriptive
observe, describe, and document aspects of a situation
Longitudinal
involve collecting data multiple times over an extended period
of time.
