AFT2 Task 2
A. The Incident with Tina Gerhardt: Missing Child
1. Tina Gerhardt is a three-year-old child who needed a routine
surgical procedure and was admitted to the Ambulatory
Surgical Unit at Nightingale Community Hospital. The surgeon
was to place ear tubes or give a bilateral myringotomy to this
child, and the procedure was estimated to take forty-five
minutes with a recovery time of at least an hour after the
surgery.
Her mother admitted Tina, and then she was taken back to the
pre-op nurse to begin preparing for surgery. The pre-op nurse
reviewed the length of the surgery and recovery with Tina’s
mother at that time, and her mother told the pre-op nurse that
she had a quick errand that needed to be done for an older
sibling of Tina’s and that she would return in time to pick up Tina
from surgery. Tina’s mother also asked the pre-op nurse to call

her cell number if Tina’s surgery ended up being quicker than
anticipated.
As you can imagine, Tina’s mother was upset beyond belief when
she returned to pick up Tina two and a half hours later. She
found that Tina had already been discharged thirty minutes
before her mother showed up at the hospital, and Tina was
missing.
The hospital called a child abduction alert or “Code Pink” and
shut down all exits, and security searched the hospital for Tina
with no success. Local police were contacted to assist with the
missing child, and when questioning Tina’s mother, they found
that she and Tina’s father are divorced, and she is the one who
has full legal custody of Tina and her siblings.
The police and law enforcement were able to locate Tina within
thirty minutes of her mother returning to the hospital. Tina was
in the presence of her father, who picked her up and discharged
her from the hospital. He was contacted, picked up Tina, and
