Standards of Care
The recipient of care, the patient, is the focus of standards of
care. The joint commission indicates that standards of care must
be developed within organizations to measure quality based on
expectations.

2) state statues (Harder guidelines)
3) professional standards
4) institutional standards ( 2nd hardest guidelines)
* Reflects the mission, values and philosophy of the profession.
* This include nursing process, professional accountability,
economic responsibilities.
* performance standards: minimum acceptable behavior to meet
department standards.
Standard of Practice
Focus on the provider of care and represent acceptable levels of
practice in patient care delivery. Like the standard of care,
practice standard address the clinical aspects of patient care
service and imply patient outcome.
1) internal: developed within the profession of nurses for the
, purpose of establishing the minimum level of nursing care.
2) external: guidelines for nursing developed by non~nurses
expectations of agencies or groups.
