5.1 Introduction: The Molecular Nature of Genes
The Transition: Historically, genes were abstract units of
inheritance; however, we now define them as specific
sequences of nucleotides in DNA (or RNA in some viruses).
Functional Output: A gene contains the "blueprint" for
producing a particular RNA molecule, which in most cases is
translated into a functional protein.
Gene Expression: This is the regulated process by which a
cell converts the information in DNA into RNA and
subsequently into proteins.
