,Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course and
transportation processes
Three processes, three 2-3 week cycles

Learning objectives and setup
Three learning objectives
1. Analyze, manage and improve the core processes of supply chains
2. Execute the diagnostic or analysis phase of a project based on supply chain data
3. Adapt supply chain processes to accommodate innovations and trends
Setup of each cycle (each process)
- Lectures: content-focused + real-case example
- Tutorial: work on exam questions
- Computer practical: diagnosing SC performance & problems within the real-world case
working with large datasets in Excel

Course structure

Assessment Methods
 The course assessment is based on a final exam (3 hours):
 50% open questions based on lecture content in a case scenario
 50% quantitative questions based on simplified versions of tools and techniques from
computer practicals
 Grades are awarded on a 1–10 scale
 up to 0.5 additional points for demonstrated effort in preparing the computer practicals (0.2
first + 0.2 second + 0.1 third practical). How?
 Submit your answers to a set of key-point questions related to the first part of the
practical (google form; deadline: 2 p.m. on the day before the practical)
 During the computer practical: we will verify your work to confirm (or not) the bonus

,Key textbooks and materials
Required and recommended reading materials:
 For Manufacturing and Warehousing:
§ 'Supply Chain Science' (Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7)
 For Transportation processes:
§ Reader: Transportation in a Supply Chain (from the book ”Supply Chain
Management”: Strategy, Planning, and Operations. Chapter 14)
§ For more insights - Online book: 'The Geography of Transport Systems’
(Chapters 1, 5, 7)
 Additional materials: articles, slides, assignments for computer practicals, other
provided readings.

Excel support
1) Excel Skills (Excel Basics)
 When: 4 September 2025 9:00 - 11:00 or 5 September 2025 9:00 - 11:00
 Where: 5415.0042
 General help for getting started if you have little or no experience working with Excel. We will
work together on:
 Sort
 Filter
 Simple functions (e.g., average; max; count if; use of $)
2) Practicals-Excel Q&A sessions
 When: by appointment only, on Tuesdays (starting next week)
 Where: 5411.0132 (except for Tuesday 28 Oct in 5419.0253)
 Students with Excel-related questions can book appointments via the following link:

Introduction to Transportation Processes

Transportation processes – role and actors
Role:
 Movement of products from one location to another
 Transportation's purpose is to overcome physical constraints (distance, time, and
administrative boundaries)
Actors:
 Shipper requires the movement of the product from A to B
 Carrier moves or transports the product
 Transportation infrastructure owner
 The bodies that set transportation policy worldwide

, Trends
Increasing demand Infrastructure expansion

Decreasing costs

Effects of these trends
- Spatial Differentiation: Transport routes link resource-
rich areas to those in need.
- Economic Impact: Transportation is crucial for global
and regional economies
 influence resource distribution and economic activities.
- Invisibility & Efficiency: Efficient transport systems are
often invisible to consumers.
- Disruption Consequences: When transportation is
disrupted, the effects are immediate and severe—
halted production, empty shelves, and stalled services.
