, Introduction: The Global Crisis of Biological
Invasions
The integrity of our planet’s ecosystems is currently facing
an unprecedented threat known as Biological Invasion.
Invasive species—which encompass a diverse range of
plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms—are organisms
that have been translocated from their native habitats to new,
foreign environments where they do not naturally belong.
Unlike "introduced species" which might coexist peacefully,
Invasive Species are defined by their aggressive expansion
and their capacity to cause significant ecological, economic,
and social disruption.
The phenomenon of invasive species is not merely a
biological curiosity; it is a global environmental crisis. These
organisms are highly opportunistic, often possessing unique
biological advantages such as rapid growth cycles, high
reproductive rates, and a lack of natural predators in their
new locations. This allows them to out compete native flora
and fauna for vital resources like food, water, and space.
In our modern, interconnected world, the "walls" of
geography have been breached by global trade, international
travel, and maritime shipping.
