Outline the role of teacher trade unions in ensuring the quality of education in South
African schools.
Teacher trade unions in South Africa play a significant role in shaping the quality of
education by representing teachers’ professional, social, and working interests. When
teachers feel supported and protected, they are more motivated and able to focus on
effective teaching, which directly influences learner achievement.
Firstly, trade unions advocate for improved working conditions such as reasonable class
sizes, adequate teaching resources, and safe school environments. These factors are
essential for quality teaching and learning. For example, unions often raise concerns
with the Department of Basic Education about overcrowded classrooms or shortages of
textbooks, which negatively affect learner performance (DBE, 2018). By negotiating
these issues, unions contribute to creating environments where meaningful teaching
can occur.
Secondly, unions promote teacher professional development. Many unions organise
workshops, subject content seminars, and curriculum training sessions to keep teachers
updated with CAPS requirements and new teaching approaches. This continuous
development helps teachers refine their instructional strategies and remain confident in
delivering the curriculum effectively (Jansen, 2019).
Thirdly, trade unions play a watchdog role by ensuring that education policies are
implemented fairly and effectively. They engage with government on policy matters
such as curriculum changes, teacher deployment, and assessment standards. Through
this engagement, unions help ensure that policies support quality education rather than
place unrealistic pressure on schools and teachers.
Finally, unions protect teachers’ rights and professional dignity. When teachers feel
secure and valued, they are more committed to their work. A protected and motivated
teacher is more likely to plan thoroughly, manage the classroom effectively, and support
learners academically and emotionally.
