1 GreenTech Packaging (GTP)
GreenTech Packaging (GTP) is a secondary sector business that manufactures
biodegradable food containers in country H. Demand for environmentally friendly packaging
has increased rapidly due to new government regulations reducing the use of plastic.
GTP supplies large supermarket chains and small independent cafés. Sales revenue
increased by 30% last year after GTP introduced a new range of compostable takeaway
boxes.
GTP currently employs 120 production workers in a factory. The Operations Director has
introduced automation in one production line to reduce costs and improve quality. However,
some employees are concerned about job security. Absenteeism has increased, and
productivity has fallen.
GTP carried out market research before launching the new takeaway boxes. The Marketing
Manager surveyed 500 café owners about the most important factor when choosing
packaging (see Fig. 1.1).
Fig. 1.1 Results of survey of 500 café owners
● Price – 40%
● Environmental impact – 30%
● Durability – 20%
● Brand reputation – 10%
GTP is considering expanding into country J within the next two years.
(a) (i) Identify one factor of production used by GTP. [1]
(ii) Explain the term secondary sector. [3]
(b) (i) Refer to Fig. 1.1. Calculate the number of café owners who identified environmental
impact as the most important factor. [3]
(ii) Explain one advantage to GTP of using a survey to collect market research data. [3]
(c) Analyse two possible effects of introducing automation on GTP’s production workers. [8]
(d) Evaluate whether expanding into country J is the best way for GTP to increase sales
revenue. [12]
