Health Illness Continuum and Relevance to Patient Care
Attainment of balanced wellbeing is a continuous process that goes beyond prevention.
The term wellness came into use upon the rise of healthcare costs, diabetes, and obesity over the
years. John Travis was one of the inventors of a new vision of wellness who introduced three
main concepts, with the illness-wellness continuum as one of them. The illness-wellness
continuum showcases the association between the treatment and wellness paradigms. That means
a person can go beyond the neutral to higher levels of wellness. The treatment paradigm brings a
person from a worse state of illness to a neutral point through drugs, surgery, and psychotherapy
to eliminate the symptoms of the illness. The wellness paradigm, on the other hand, is used at
any point in the continuum to help a person achieve higher wellness levels. The continuum care
system allows tracking of a patient’s condition based on physical, psychological, and spiritual
environments, thus determining the intensity of care needed to boost their health.
The health-illness continuum serves as a graphical illustration of the concept of human
wellbeing as a whole. Sometimes individuals do not show physical symptoms of the disease, but
they still complain of feeling unwell either physically or emotionally (Payton, 2009). The health-
illness perspective thus comes in handy in treating patients as it makes contributions to their
mental and emotional development. Therefore, it becomes easier to motivate patients to achieve
better health and prevent physical and emotional diseases. It achieves this by measuring the scale
in which a patient lies in the continuum and estimating their developments. Besides, self-care is
emphasized in the health-illness continuum. Ideally, traditional medicine only returns a patient to
a neutral point of wellness (Wickramarathne, Phuoc & Albattat, 2020). Upon reaching this point,
the patient, as an individual, has to assume responsibility and take an active role in achieving
