Assignment 2
Due May 2026
, 1. Evaluate the importance of the module HED2601 in your training as a
teacher
HED2601 is important because it provides a historical and theoretical foundation for
understanding early childhood education. It helps student teachers see how past events
such as the Industrial Revolution shaped schooling and childcare systems. This allows
teachers to make informed decisions in modern classrooms rather than teaching
mechanically. The module also exposes students to multiple perspectives, including
Africanisation and indigenous knowledge, which supports culturally responsive
teaching. In addition, it strengthens reflective practice by encouraging teachers to
question inequalities and policy changes in South Africa’s education system
(Department of Basic Education, 2011; Vygotsky, 1978).
2. Table comparing education and childcare practices before and after the
Industrial Revolution
Before Industrial Revolution After Industrial Revolution

instruction
