Assignment 2
Due May 2026
, Question 1: Evaluate the importance of the module HED2601 in your training as a
teacher.
HED2601 is important because it gives a strong historical and theoretical foundation for
early childhood education. Understanding how education for young children developed
over time helps a teacher make informed decisions in the classroom. For example, by
learning about past approaches such as community-based childrearing or Montessori
education, a teacher realises that young children learn best through play, exploration
and meaningful interaction rather than rigid academic instruction. The module also
develops critical reflection skills so that teachers can question current practices and
adapt them to the needs of diverse learners. In this way, it shapes professional identity,
strengthens pedagogical knowledge and prepares teachers to create inclusive and
developmentally appropriate learning environments (Department of Basic Education,
2015).
