600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
The value of using an authentic text is that it allows the advanced students to see the everyday
language used in English based cultures. Some articles will challenge students with vocabulary that
is difficult, but imperative to know as it is used in complex reports and articles. Authentic text can
vary in topics and styles of writing which also adds an additional element of learning as native
speakers each have their own cultures within their different communities. This exposure will assist
non- native speakers to address formal and informal language and would assist in the day-to-day
functions such as the correct formal language to use when emailing an employer, or an informal
email sent to a friend.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
I chose festivals as it’s a fun way to introduce my multilingual class to their environment; as well as
to show them ‘they are able to understand genuine texts aimed at native speakers’ and thus
motivate them (TEFL Academy 2020, Unit 9). The topic also covers a large scope of interests and
hopefully intrigues my entire class.
The students will be more proficient in speaking with native English speakers about interesting
activities they did over weekends, thus boosting their confidence for real life situations. The text
introducers students to a variety of cultural activities and opinions thereof. Therefore, guiding the
students on various ones of formal and informal communication.
The text was adapted and adjusted accordingly to suit the needs of the class. Unnecessary
information was omitted, and some grammatical errors corrected within the articles. Since these
are annual events the text had to be adjusted to the appropriate tense to suit the lesson and
follow up activities.
I chose the 12 vocabulary words for their applicable value in daily life and conversation. Since
many of my students are in professional environments (i.e., Business and university) and words
such as acclaimed, atmospheric, renowned, innovative, reinforced were chosen due to their
likeliness of being used in said environments. The rest of the vocabulary and topic would be very
useful for other students, especially the ones that are only staying short term.
