Organisational agility refers to an organisation’s ability to sense changes in its internal
and external environment, respond quickly, and adapt its strategies, structures and
processes without losing effectiveness. It is not only about speed but also about
flexibility and learning. An agile organisation can reconfigure resources, redesign
processes and shift priorities in order to remain competitive when conditions change
(Robbins & Judge, 2017).
One key element of organisational agility is environmental awareness. This means
continuously scanning the market, technology trends, customer needs and regulatory
shifts. For example, when a retail company notices that customers are moving toward
online shopping, an agile organisation will quickly expand its digital platforms rather
than wait until sales decline.
Another aspect is flexible structures. Agile organisations avoid rigid hierarchies and
encourage teamwork and decentralised decision making. When employees at different
levels are empowered to make decisions, the organisation reacts faster to change. For
instance, a customer service team that can resolve complaints immediately without
waiting for senior approval demonstrates agility in action.
Learning orientation also strengthens agility. Organisations that encourage
experimentation and reflection are better prepared for change. If a new product launch
fails, an agile organisation analyses feedback, adjusts the design and relaunches
instead of abandoning the idea completely. This continuous learning cycle improves
adaptability over time (Burnes, 2017).
Leadership plays a central role in managing and responding to change. Agile leaders
communicate a clear vision, reduce uncertainty and support employees during
transitions. For example, when a university shifts to online teaching, leaders who
provide training and clear guidance help staff adapt more smoothly.
