1.1 PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
1.1.1 Definition
- “any force exerted by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure above resting level”
o The term “health-enhancing physical activity” emphasizes the connection with
health by focusing on “any form of physical activity that benefits health”.
o “Active living” is a way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines. The
goal for the general adult population is to accumulate at least half an hour of activity
each day.
- Physical activity includes leisure time physical activity (for example: walking, dancing,
gardening, hiking, swimming), transportation (e.g. walking or cycling), occupational (i.e.
work), household chores, play, games, sports or planned exercise, in the context of daily,
family, and community activities.
- Exercise is a type of physical activity that's planned and structured.
Lifting weights, taking an aerobics class, and playing on a sports team are examples of
exercise.
