A cell is the smallest unit of life that can survive and function on its own. Think of it as a tiny
factory that keeps everything in your body or in a plant running smoothly.
All living things are made of cells.
Some organisms are single-celled (like bacteria), others are multi-celled (like humans).
2. Types of Cells
a) Prokaryotic Cells
Simple cells without a nucleus.
DNA floats freely in the cell.
Example: Bacteria.
b) Eukaryotic Cells
Complex cells with a nucleus.
Nucleus holds the DNA, the cell’s instruction manual.
Found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists.
3. Parts of a Cell (Organelles)
Organelle
Function
Nucleus
Control center; stores DNA.
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like fluid; holds organelles.
Cell Membrane
Protective barrier; controls entry/exit.
Mitochondria
Powerhouse; produces energy.
Ribosomes
