Planning
how do you get to know where you want to be? steps must be
taken...
Stages of Change:
1. Precontemplation
2. Contemplation
3. Preparation
4. Action
5. Maintenance
Complex reflections
A response that goes beyond what the client has directly stated
or implied, adding content or emphasis to focus on meanings or
feelings that the client did not directly express
Simple reflections
A response that identifies the emotion expressed by the client
but does not go beyond what the client has said or directly
implied
Socratic Dialogue
, A process that cognitive therapists use in helping clients
empirically test their core beliefs. Clients form hypotheses about
their behavior through observation and monitoring.
Series of well-developed, well-placed questions that literally
guide a patient to an expected response rather than simply
pointing out the answer.
Steps of Cognitive restructuring
1. TUNING IN- helping the client identify the distressing
thoughts and the situations in which they occur
2. FOCUS ON UNHEALTHY WORDS- helping the client
identify the emotional response, unpleasant mood, or problem
behavior that follows the distressing thought
3. STOP THOSE MESSAGES- helping the client stop thinking
the distressing thoughts by helping the client think more rational
or desirable thoughts
4. Changes negatives to positives
Psychoeducation
the teaching of patient and families about the patient's disorder
in order to reduce familial distress and equip them to work
effectively with the patient (giving other resources to educate
themselves)
Guided relaxation
guided imagery, deep breathing exercises, "stress" patients,
"imagine you're at the beach"
Meditation
