In service education hours A minimum of 12 hours required per year to keep skills updated. Care plan Individualized for each resident, developed to help achieve the goals of care. LNA Scope of Practice NA's do not administer medications, do not honor a request to do something outside of the scope of practice, do not perform procedures that require sterile technique, do not diagnose illnesses or prescribe medicine, do not tell the family or resident the diagnosis or the medical treatment plan. Professional relationship With Residents: Positive attitude, doing only assigned tasks, keeping information confidential, being polite and cheerful at all times. With Employers: Completing tasks efficiently, following all policies and procedures, documenting and reporting carefully and correctly. Time management Planning ahead, prioritizing, making a schedule, combining activities, getting help. Ethics Knowledge of right and wrong. Abuse/Reporting of abuse Is purposeful mistreatment that causes physical, mental, or emotional pain or injury to someone. Resident Rights Quality of life, Maintaining high level of wellness, fully informed about rights and services, Participate in own care, Making independent choices, Privacy and confidentiality, dignity/respect/freedom, security of possessions, during transfers and discharges, complain, visits, social services. Ombudsman Legal advocate for residents in long-term care facilities; help resolve disputes and settle conflicts. HIPPA(Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) This law was passed to help keep health information confidential. Employees can be fined or imprisoned if they do not follow patient privacy. Communication Is the process of exchanging information with others. It is a process of sending and receiving messages. Objective Information Based on seeing, hearing, touching, or smelling. Subjective Information Something a person cannot or did not observe, but is based on something the resident reported that may or may not be true. Barriers to communication Resident can not hear, see, difficult to understand. Also using slang, medical terms, clichés, responding with why, giving advice, asking yes/no questions, speaking different languages. Combative Behavior The way to respond to this is to step out of the way or block. Infection Control Standard/ Transmission based precautions/ PPE Treating blood, body fluids, non-intact skin, and mucous membranes as if they were infected. Washing hands, wearing gloves, washing all skin surfaces that have been contaminated, wearing disposable gown, wearing masks and protective goggles, wearing gloves when handling sharps, never attempt to recap needles or sharps, avoid nicks and cuts, bagging all contaminated supplies, labeling body fluids that are being saved, dispose of wastes correctly. Tuberculosis/MRSA/cile two of these are MDRO's the other may develop into an MDRO. One of these is an airborne disease and two are contact diseases. Falls When a resident does this it is best to let them fall to the floor, if they happen to do this onto you gently slide them down your body to the floor. DO NOT TRY TO CATCH THEM. Normal Changes in Aging Thinner skin, weak muscles, brittle bones, sensitivity of nerve endings decrease, responses and reflexes slow, short term memory loss, senses weaken, heart works less efficiently, oxygen in blood decreases, appetite decreases, urinating is more frequent, digestion takes longer, hormones decrease, immunity weakens, lifestyle changes occur. Eating/Choking/Positioning When someone has an obstructed airway, abdominal thrusts may be needed. One of these may lead to the other. Restraints A physical or chemical way to restrict voluntary movement or behavior. Vests or jackets, belts, wrist/ankle, and mitts. Body Mechanics The way the parts of the body work together when a person moves. Using this helps save energy and prevents injury. Emergency Care Assess the situation and assess the victim. These are some examples that need this definition; Choking, Heart attack, bleeding, poisoning, burns, fainting, nose bleed, insulin reaction and diabetic ketoacidosis, seizures, CVA or stroke, vomiting or falls. Seizures/Strokes Involuntary, often violent, contractions of muscles. People who have serious illness, fever, head injury, or a disorder such as epilepsy. this occurs when blood supply to a part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel leaks or ruptures within the brain. Activities of Daily Living (ADL's) Bathing, skin, nail and hair care, and assistance with walking, eating, dressing, transferring, and toileting.
