, QUESTION 1
1.1
Intelligibility refers to the ability of a speaker or writer to communicate in a way that is
clear and understandable to the intended audience. It means that the message is
expressed in language that the audience can interpret correctly without confusion.
Intelligibility depends on factors such as vocabulary choice, accent, structure and
context. If language is adapted appropriately to suit the audience, meaning is more
easily shared (ENG1515 501/0/2020). Therefore, intelligibility is not about sounding
sophisticated, but about ensuring that communication is effective and meaningful.
1.2
Objective language refers to language that presents information in a neutral and
factual manner, without personal opinion, emotional bias or exaggerated expression.
It focuses on clear, accurate description and is commonly used in academic and
scientific writing. Objective language relies on denotative meaning and avoids
persuasive or emotionally loaded wording (Bailey 2015). In this module, objective
language is important because it supports clarity, fairness and critical thinking when
analysing texts (ENG1515 501/0/2020).
