PROFILE PAPER IS WRITTEN IN ENGLISH FOR A BONUS POINT! This profile paper investigates the relationship between Crohn's disease and mental health among adolescents. It focuses on the brain-gut connection, the interaction between the nervous system and the gut microbiome, and how it can affect mood and mental well-being. The research combines a literature review on Crohn's disease, treatments (such as dietary supplements, Prednisone, Azathioprine, Infliximab, Humira), physical symptoms, and psychological impact with interviews of adolescents with and without Crohn's disease. The PWS addresses questions such as: what is Crohn's disease, what are the physical effects, what is a mental illness and how common is it, and is there a correlation between Crohn's disease and mental health? The interviews show that most young people with Crohn's disease experience a decline in their mental well-being, highlighting the importance of recognizing the psychological impact of a chronic illness. In addition, it is discussed that mental health is still partly seen as taboo, although awareness among young people is growing. The paper also discusses scientific findings about neurotransmitters in the gut, such as serotonin, and how an unbalanced gut flora can affect mental health. Recommendations are made about the importance of diet, fiber intake, and stress management as ways to support both physical and psychological well-being.

, Preface

Your life starts the second you take your first breath. You can now breathe, cry, see, feel
and way more. But your life isn’t the only one starting. From the beginning, every human
has its own gut microbiome containing gut bacteria. The goal is to make sure your gut
bacteria is well-balanced, so your mood and mental well-being are in its best shape.

There is a constant exchange in your body consisting of signals and information
throughout your nervous system and gut bacteria. This communication influences the
balance between these two, but also other aspects such as your physical health, mental
well-being, digestion, mood and so on. This connection is powerful because if one of
these systems has an imbalance, will the other system also experience an imbalance?

In this report, I will work according to questions that are correlated to Crohn’s disease and
mental health. I will be conducting a literary investigation that will be backed up by several
sources from other studies. I will also conduct interviews with adolescents, diagnosed with
Crohn’s disease, and without Crohn’s disease asking about their mental well-being.

Firstly, I will start by explaining what Crohn’s disease is and the type of treatments available
for it. Then, I will work up by explaining the physical symptoms.

After this, I will explain what a mental illness is and how common a mental illness is. An
important aspect about mental illness is that it is sometimes still considered to be a taboo.
By this subject being a taboo, it is hard to picture how many people truly suffer from it and
in what ways they may need help.

Lastly, I will conduct two interviews, one with participants diagnosed with Crohn’s disease
and one interview with participants without Crohn’s disease. I will write my conclusion
based on the interviews and medical evidence.
