Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs The hierarchy of needs, comes from psychologist Abraham Maslow. Maslow
believed that human beings have a series of different needs that must be met if
they are to lead a complete and fulfilled life.


Bandura's Theory of Social Learning Albert Bandura, a psychological researcher, developed a theory of social learning
that suggests that people learn from one another by observing others' actions
and the results of those actions.

Schlossberg's Theory of Transition Nancy Schlossberg also assessed how adult students learn, and she used her
findings to develop a theory of transition.6 Schlossberg found that as adults, we
learn new roles when we go through changes in our lives. In fact, we constantly
change roles, and we even juggle multiple roles at the same time.


Learning Preferences Learning preferences are ways that people prefer to learn. Through work and
other prior experience, you may have some sense of how you like or don't like to
learn.


The VARK Inventory The VARK inventory is a sixteen-item questionnaire that focuses on how learners
prefer to use their senses to learn. The letters in VARK stand for visual, aural,
read/write, and kinesthetic.


Visual Learners Prefer to learn information they see through charts, graphs, symbols, and other
visual means.


Aural Learners prefer to hear information.

Kinesthetic learners Prefer to learn through experience and practice, whether simulated or real.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) The MBTI was created by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother, Katharine Cook
Briggs. The MBTI examines basic personality characteristics, including how they
relate to human interaction and learning, and assigns you to a personality type
your score represents your "psychological type," or the combination of your
preferences on four different scales.


Theory of Multiple Intelligences suggests that human beings have different types of intelligence.9 This theory was
developed in 1983 by Howard Gardner. Gardner's theory is based on the idea that
the traditional definition of human intelligence is very limited. Gardner's theory, all
human beings have at least eight different types of intelligence.


verbal/linguistic intelligence Likes to read, write, and tell stories and is good at memorizing information.


logical/mathematical intelligence likes to work with numbers and is good at problem solving and logical processes.


visual/spatial intelligence likes to draw and play with machines and is good at puzzles and reading maps
and charts.


bodily/kinesthetic intelligence likes to move around and is good at sports, dance, and acting.


musical/rhythmic intelligence Likes to sing and play an instrument and is good at remembering melodies and
noticing pitches and rhythms.


interpersonal intelligence likes to have many friends and is good at understanding people, leading others,
and mediating conflicts.


intrapersonal intelligence likes to work alone, has a high level of self-understanding, and is an original
thinker.


naturalistic intelligence likes to be outside and is good at preservation, conservation, and organizing a
living area.


WHEN LEARNING PREFERENCES AND TEACHING This may not be surprising, but instructors tend to teach in ways that fit their own
METHODS CONFLICT particular preferences. So instructors who like to learn in a read-write or an aural
mode may rely on lectures and give the class little opportunity for interaction or
visual and kinesthetic learning. Instructors who prefer a more interactive, hands-
on environment may involve students in more discussion and learning through
experience.

able to receive special services or accommodations from schools and colleges
