Include the following sections (detailed criteria listed below and in the grading rubric
Prevalent Infectious and Chronic Diseases
a) Describe the selected geographic region.
The selected region is Fredericksburg, Virginia, located in the southeastern United States.
The city is known for its rich history and diverse geography. The city's population is
approximately 29,240 (World Population Review, 2024). It boasts a mix of coastal plains, rolling
hills, and the Appalachian Mountains. The state is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and
the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. Its climate ranges from humid subtropical in the east to
more temperate in the west.
b) Identify the prevalent infectious and chronic diseases in the region.
In Fredericksburg, prevalent infectious diseases include respiratory infections like influenza,
as well as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV. The

, city has also seen occasional outbreaks of vector-borne diseases like Lyme disease. Chronic
diseases in Virginia are primarily heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. High rates of obesity and
smoking contribute to the prevalence of these conditions (Virginia Department of Health, 2024).
c) Compare and contrast the prevalence of diseases in the selected region with disease rates
and trends in a different geographic area of your choosing, noting similarities and
differences.
In contrast, Illinois experiences a different disease profile compared to Fredericksburg,
Virginia. Like Fredericksburg, Illinois has high rates of chronic diseases such as heart disease,
cancer, and diabetes. However, the prevalence of respiratory diseases like asthma is notably
higher in Illinois, particularly in urban areas such as Chicago, where air pollution and
environmental factors contribute to the higher rates (Illinois Department of Public Health, 2023).
Infectious diseases also differ, mosquito-borne diseases are less common in Chicago due to its
cooler climate. In comparison, Fredericksburg sees a higher prevalence of tick-borne diseases
like Lyme disease due to its rural, wooded areas. Both regions report similar influenza trends, but
Illinois tends to experience a longer flu season due to its colder climate. Additionally, the urban
density of Chicago contributes to faster transmission rates of infectious diseases, unlike the more
rural Fredericksburg area, where disease spread may be slower.
d) Discuss the variables that contribute to the noted similarities and differences.
Climate plays a significant role, with Illinois' colder winters limiting mosquito activity, while
Fredericksburg's warmer, wooded environment fosters tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.
Urban density in Illinois, especially Chicago, contributes to faster transmission of respiratory and
