Child Language Acquisition [Stages of
development]
5 Stages of Development:
1. Pre-verbal Stage
2. Holophrastic Stage
3. Two-word Stage
4. Telegraphic Stage
5. Post-telegraphic Stage
1. Pre-verbal Stage:
Occurs straight after birth and is when a baby
experiments with noises/sounds but they don’t
produce recognisable words:
o Crying – the first nose a baby makes as they
exercise their vocal cords. They learn to make
different sounds, and make noises to gain
attention of signal a physical need e.g. hunger
or tiredness.
o Cooing [2 months] – a baby begins to develop
control over the vocal muscles but cannot yet
form recognisable vowels and consonants. It is
the experimentation with the noises that are
made when the tongue and back of the mouth
come into contact
o Babbling:
- Reduplicated babbling = repeated sounds e.g.
bababababa
