Advanced Professional Nurse as Advocate
Advocating for patients is common practice for advanced professional nurses in the
clinical setting. Patient outcomes are linked to the direct care nurses provide. Nurses must
advocate within the interdisciplinary team to ensure patient safety and standards of practice. In
the clinical setting, a nurse may advocate on the patient's behalf for the physician to have a
family meeting to discuss the plan of care and treatment options. The nurse can arrange a family
meeting per the patient's request. A nurse may also advocate for a patient experiencing pain in
the clinical setting. The nurse can advocate for improved pain management that will assist in
comforting the patient.
Advanced professional nurses also play a role in addressing at-risk populations in the
community. Advanced professional nurses can advocate promoting policy reform to reach
communities at a higher level than just individual patients in a clinical setting. Nurses are present
in every healthcare setting and possess a unique role in formulating policy (Burke, 2016). The
difference between advocating in a clinical setting versus an at-risk population is the indirect
impact the nurse can make through policy change and the number of people influenced by the
change. A policy change may assist an entire community and improve many lives. Professional
nurses can focus on the community's preventative care needs to reach people who may not have
access to healthcare. Policy change can facilitate improved standards of care for
societies. Policies also impact resources needed for at risk populations.
Interprofessional Collaboration
It is essential to promote interprofessional collaboration within the Advocacy Action
Team. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has developed the TEAMSTEPPS
framework to improve communication and collaboration skills amongst healthcare professionals.
