Service Line for Adult Diabetic Education
Proposed Nursing Service Idea
Proposed nursing service line of a diabetes management service in Utah
County, Utah, targeting adults 20 years and older and providing education
and resources to the older population diagnosed with Diabetes. Focusing on
education for diabetes management including but not limited to diabetic
technology education, understanding how to count and dose for
carbohydrates and Diabetes diet and nutrition, Diabetes and pregnancy,
Diabetes and gum disease, prevention of Diabetes complications such as
neuropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular disease. This service line will be
staffed with nurse diabetic educators and a nurse practitioner at the helm in
collaboration with patients, primary care physicians, and endocrinologists.
The purpose of the service line would be to provide extensive
education to adults who are newly diagnosed with Diabetes to help them
understand the disease and how to manage it to prevent complications. 1.7
million adults ages 20 and older are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and use
insulin. 3.6 million adults 20 and older started using insulin within a year
after diagnosis. (Center of Disease Control, 2024)
Importance
Adults diagnosed with Diabetes in their adult years don't have the
support and education available like the youth diagnosed with Diabetes. As
