Introduction
It would be greatly beneficial to the patient, families, and the organization to have a Post-
Surgical Dressing and Drain Educational Coordinator. The purpose that it serves is that
specifically educates the patients and families on the outpatient requirements for better outcomes
tailored for their specific surgery. The coordinator needs to be able to have the targeted
conversations regarding what the patient can do to improve their personal outcomes (smoking
cessation or decrease, close blood sugar control, etc.). They need to demonstrate and have teach
back session ability for dressings changes and drain care prior to discharge home. They would
also follow up with the patient and family a few days post discharge to reinforce teachings,
address any questions, and be a support for the patient needs.
The Joint Commission considers surgical site infections (SSI) to be very dangerous,

incidence of SSIs in the U.S. ranges from 160,000 to 300,000, and the estimated annual cost
ranges from $3.5 billion to $10 billion.” (Loyola University Health System, 2017) “SSIs are the
most common and costly of all hospital-acquired infections, accounting for 20 percent of all
hospital-acquired infections.” (Loyola University Health System, 2017) There has been a lot of
policy and practice changes implemented due to this rise in numbers to attempt to lower them
from the organizational side, but we can do more on the patient side of the issue which is just
as important in the healing process.
