1. Definition & Nature of Management
Management is the process of planning, organising, leading, and
controlling resources (human, financial, physical, and informational) to
achieve organisational goals effectively and efficiently.
KEY MANAGEMENT CONCEPTS
• Effectiveness: Doing the right things to achieve goals
• Efficiency: Doing things right with minimum waste of resources
• Management involves working with and through people
• Applies to all types of organisations (public, private, NGO)
2. The Four Functions of Management (POLC)
Function Description
Planning Setting objectives and determining the best course of
action to achieve them
Organising Arranging tasks, people and resources to accomplish
the work
Leading Directing, influencing and motivating employees to
perform tasks
Controlling Monitoring performance, comparing it to goals, and
taking corrective action
3. Management Levels
