,General Marking Guidance

• All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark
the first candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last

• Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be
rewarded for what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for
omissions

• Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme, not according to
their perception of where the grade boundaries may lie

• There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme
should be used appropriately

• All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded.
Examiners should always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer
matches the mark scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award
zero marks if the candidate’s response is not worthy of credit according to
the mark scheme

• Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the
principles by which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be
limited

• When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark
scheme to a candidate’s response, the team leader must be consulted

• Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced
it with an alternative response

Question There are specific choices in this extract for performers. Mark
Number You are going to play Niru. Explain two ways you would use
physical skills to play this character in this extract.

1(a)(i) One mark for each way identified and an additional mark for each (4)
linked explanation. Candidates may refer to the following in their
answer, for example:

• proxemics used (1) to show her interaction with Mrs
Lahiri (1)
• movement (1) as she embraces (1) Mrs Lahiri to show
the closeness of the relationship (1)
• facial expression (1) to show her changing emotions (1)
• gestures used (1) when taking Mrs Lahiri’s arm to lead
her out (1) or to intensify her feelings (1).

Question You are going to play Mrs Lahiri. She is grateful. Mark
Number As a performer, give three suggestions of how you would use
performance skills to show this.
You must provide a reason for each suggestion.
1(a)(ii) One mark for each suggestion and one mark for each (6)
appropriate reason. Candidates may refer to the following in
their answer, for example:
• her eye contact as she responds to Niru’s offer to ask for
work (1) to indicate her relief at the opportunity (1)
• use of space (1), e.g. to show she is comfortable in
Niru’s presence (1)
• use of facial expression (1) to show concern she has
offended Niru (1) or her pride in helping her mother (1)
• change in tone (1) or volume (1) to show she thinks Niru
has had an easy life (1) or her pride to indicate she is
helping her brothers (1)
• use of gesture on ‘I didn’t mean to offend you’ (1) to
indicate an apology for her assertion (1)
• physicality (1) when hugging Niru to indicate the
resumption of their close relationship (1).
