The code of this module is CML1501 and it is a semester module. This
means that students registering for the first semester will write their
examinations in May/June 2020 and for those students who are
registering for the second semester, you will write your examinations
in October/November 2020. Should you qualify for a supplementary or
an aegrotat examination you will be able to write it in the next
semester.
As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a

2 OVERVIEW OF CML1501
2.1 Purpose
Communication law is a branch of the law that focuses on regulating the transfer
of information through the computer, internet, cable, satellite, telephone, and
wireless communication. Communication law covers several areas, like the law and
journalism, market regulation, content regulation, market access, and consumer
protection. High priority issues include the media and democracy, censorship,
copyright, defamation, invasion of privacy, new media technology and the regulation
of the media. The purpose of this module is to consequently equip students with
knowledge of and insight into communication law.
This module aims at fulfilling the needs not only of those who wish to follow a career
in journalism, but also of those who are interested in the wider field of general
communications.
